Clive Mono Mukundu is a music producer, session musician, composer & multi-instrumentalist but better known as a lead guitarist. He was born on Tuesday the 15th of September 1970 in the small town of Rusape, Zimbabwe to parents George Mukundu and Joyce Gwatidzo.
FAMILY
Clive is married to Jean Kandeya Mukundu, they have 2 children Taririo Nyasha, born 1994, and Takakunda, born 1998.
EARLY CHILDHOOD
Clive grew up in Harare high density suburbs of Kambuzuma, Kuwadzana & Mufakose. During his high school days, he had a single dreadlock (mono-lock) hairstyle which earned him the nickname Mono from his peers. His first interest in music was noticeable at a very tender age however, this was against his father’s wishes were so each time seen holding any musical instrument, he received a corporal punishment. However, Mono was so resilient to the opposition that at 9, he had made himself a homemade tin guitar which he played in private. It was at this age that he began composing music. On January 22 1988, he was 17 and he met Last Saidi, a bass player who taught him to play his his first 3 chords on a standard guitar. He then went on to teach himself to play the lead guitar by copying other guitarists on the radio, as well as others he came in contact with.

Learnt to play a standard guitar and formed first band, Sarungano Chanters. The band failed over ten times at record deal auditions which had a toll on the members, leading to the group’s disbandment end of 1989.

Joined Chax Brothers, a band that played Sungura, Raggae & Mbira, the band inclueded Admire Kasenga & Jackson Phiri. Mono left the band in 1990.

He co-founded a band, Chikokoko based in Mutare first at Tsvingwe bar in Penhalonga and at Dangamvura Hotel, both in Mutare. Mono left Mutare end of 1991 and recorded the Ruvengo album the following year. He left the band in 1993

During the Chikoko band break, Mono relocated to Mutare & joined the Handworkers band, that included Brian Nhanhanga. He joined the Seasons band and performed around Harare & Mutare backing Patrick Mukwamba from April to August 1992. Mono co-founded a Raggae band, Rough Mix Club with his friends, Webster Kunaka & Everisto Jack (bass) Wellington Masvosva (Drums), they performed around Harare and Bulawayo. He performed as a session musician for Peter Tembo & the Scanners International, the Dendemaro Band and many other smaller bands.

Formed Raggae duo wit friend, Christopher Kamowa “Chris & Mono” which disbanded after the failure of a number of demo tapes.

1994
Mono joined the John Ali & the Marakashi Band which played Congolese Rhumba & Soukous which comprised of Zimbabwean, Zambian & Congolese musicians. The group disbanded the same year. He then joined the Kwasa Kwasa Kings, another Congolese Rhumba band which he left in June 1994. On Tuesday June 28th, Clive joined Egea Gospel train after converting to Christianity. The Band included Ivy Kombo, Annie Kombo & Carol Mujokoro. They recorded the album Ndinokudai Jesu & toured around Zimbabwe and Mozambique for outreach programs.

Mono joined Christian Life Centre Church (now known as Faith in God Church) as a gospel outreach musician for their band, Clicet Crusaders. They recorded one album and toured around Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Zambia & Malawi and continued to work as a part-time session musician.

May 1999, Mono left the Christian Life Centre and joined the Revival Ministries as a full time church musician

In March 2000, Mono left the Revival Ministries and joined Crossline Music, a Christian outreach group which he left on the 2nd of September to concentrate on session work.

Mono enrolled at the Zimbabwe college of music on the National Certificate in Music Program and graduated in 2002 with the best guitar student award. he started teaching the guitar at the College of Music, Prince Edward School & Don Bosco Youth Training Centre. During the same period, he worked part time as a music producer at Ngaavongwe Records.

Mono Joined the Late Dr. Oliver Tuku Mtukudzi & The Black Spirits. They toured around the world & recorded 4 albums together.

Mono left the Black Spirits Band and opened Monolio Studios. He also joined the late Chiwoniso Maraire band and toured Europe.
